Two major players in the portable fridge-freezer market are ARB and Engel. Both are established brands in the overlanding market, but how do they compare? ARB vs. ENGEL.

Keeping the food fresh for longer periods of time used to be a major challenge on a long overlanding trip. Not to be confused with less effective 12-volt “coolers”, both the ARB and the Engel units are true refrigerators/freezers so the task of always having fresh food on an overlanding trip can be easily tackled these days.

As an alternative, you can consider (non 12V) good quality coolers, however, that would put a limit on how long can you be out in the wild without new supply of fresh ice.

Features of 12V Fridge-Freezers

• Portability: most of the time the fridge will be sitting in your rig, however, occasionally, you will need to take it out, so size and weight is an important factor. For this reason, in our ARB vs. Engel comparison below, we are going to focus on capacities around the 40 Quart mark.

• Capacity: before deciding on which unit to purchase, you need to find out the minimum capacity you require on your trips by creating a list of foods you would be taking with you.

• Power consumption: as important as it is not to put too much strain on the electric system of your vehicle, you will need to run the fridge overnight while camping as well, therefore low power consumption is vital.

• Good insulation: insulation is a factor which is closely related to power consumption. If a fridge is well insulated, it would require less power to keep the contents cool for a longer period of time. This is because the insulation will protect the contents from the outside heat and at the same time prevents the cold from the fridge to escape.

• Compressor: compressors are the engines of a fridge. The quality of the compressor of a fridge will decide how well it will cool the contents and how long the fridge will last. A Few Things to Highlight

The controls sit on the front of the ARB and on the back of the Engel, though the Engel panel still faces the user. Small thing, but it decides which way round the fridge can sit in a drawer system.

Two things this article used to claim about the ARB no longer hold on the Elements. There is no second dairy compartment - ARB raised the evaporator to wrap the whole cabinet instead. And we are not repeating the internal light and drain plug claims, because ARB does not list either for this model.

So the old case for the ARB, which rested on those small extras, has to be made differently now. It is made on build instead, and it is a stronger argument than the one it replaces.

The cabinet and lid are 304 grade stainless steel with ASA protectors on the corners and cast stainless hinges holding a lid that does not come off. The control panel is weatherproof. The mounting bolts are tamperproof and there is a 4-digit PIN lock with a locked/unlocked warning. None of that is styling: it is a fridge designed to live on an open tray or in an exposed bed and be left there.

The display dims, which matters more than it sounds when it is sitting behind your head at night, and it reads out supply voltage, so you can see what your battery is doing without a separate meter. The gas strut holds the lid at any angle, which you notice the first time you load it one-handed in wind.

The Engel answers with the things that matter a long way from a wall socket. It runs on AC as well as DC and switches between them on its own, with AC taking priority. It tolerates being 30 degrees off level, which is a real consideration on a side slope. And the Swing Motor compressor draws little enough to run off a modest battery or a portable power station.

The best argument for choosing an Engel is its reliability. They have been around for decades, and owners report them surviving years of corrugations that would shake a lesser unit apart. That is not a specification you can put in a table, and it is the reason plenty of people never consider anything else.

Price is the complaint for both. They are expensive, and neither brand pretends otherwise.

Is ARB or Engel Better?

Neither is a bad buy. On features and build the ARB Elements edges ahead, so it takes this comparison by a small margin. The Engel is the more proven of the two, and it is the fridge-freezer in our own vehicle. Buy the Engel if reliability and power flexibility matter most, and the ARB if the fridge has to live outside and look after itself.

Both of these will keep food cold a long way from anywhere, and neither is a bad buy.

The ARB takes it, by a small margin. The margin used to come from small conveniences; on the Elements it comes from how the thing is built. Stainless cabinet and lid, protected corners, cast hinges, a weatherproof panel, tamperproof bolts and a PIN lock add up to a fridge you can leave on an open tray and walk away from. The dimmable display and the voltage readout are the kind of details you appreciate on the fourth night, not in the shop.

It is a small margin, and worth saying why. The Engel is the more proven thing. Decades of them have survived roads that destroy other gear, it runs on AC or DC without being asked, and it will work at 30 degrees off level. An Engel is also the fridge-freezer in our own vehicle, so this is not a verdict against it from a distance.

Put simply: buy the Engel if reliability and power flexibility are what you lose sleep over, and the ARB if the fridge has to live outside and look after itself. On features and build the ARB edges ahead, and that is what decides it here.
